Exploring Austria’s Most Charming Alpine City

After exploring Vienna, my journey through Austria continued to another breathtaking destination — Salzburg. I have visited Salzburg twice, and every visit felt like stepping into a postcard. Nestled along the Salzach River and surrounded by the Alps, Salzburg is famous for its Baroque architecture, musical heritage, and charming Old Town. Whether you are planning a Salzburg itinerary, a Hallstatt day trip, or visiting during Christmas markets, this guide covers everything you need to know.

How to Reach Salzburg

Salzburg is well connected by flights and trains from major European cities. During my visit, I took the ÖBB train from Vienna, which is one of the most convenient and scenic ways to travel between the two cities salzburg. The journey takes roughly 2.5 hours and passes through beautiful Austrian countryside.

During my visits, I stayed at Motel One and Hotel IMLAUER & Bräu salzburg. Both hotels are within walking distance of the historic centre.

  • Hotel IMLAUER & Bräu – closer to Old Town and very convenient for sightseeing
  • Motel One – slightly farther but offers scenic river views

Best Things to Do in Salzburg

  • Mirabell Palace & Gardens: Start your Salzburg sightseeing at Mirabell Palace and its stunning gardens. The beautifully landscaped gardens offer incredible views of the fortress and surrounding mountains. The gardens are also famous as filming locations from The Sound of Music.

  • Salzburg Old Town (Altstadt): The Salzburg Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the city. Here you will find, Mozart’s Birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, and Getreidegasse. Walking through the narrow streets lined with historic buildings feels like stepping back in time

  • Hohensalzburg Fortress: Towering above the city is the magnificent Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Take the funicular up to the fortress to explore its museums and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Salzburg and the Alps.

Christmas in Salzburg – A Magical Experience

Christmas in Salzburg is simply magical. The city hosts charming Christmas markets at Domplatz and Residenzplatz, where you can shop for handcrafted gifts and enjoy traditional Austrian food and warm drinks salzburg. Walking through the decorated streets of Getreidegasse during winter feels like entering a festive fairy tale salzburg. You can also enjoy classical Advent concerts and musical performances throughout the city.

Visit the Silent Night Chapel

Day Trip from Salzburg – Hallstatt

One of the best day trips from Salzburg is to Hallstatt, one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Located on the shores of Lake Hallstatt and surrounded by the Dachstein Alps, the village offers breathtaking landscapes and charming streets to explore. There are multiple ways to reach Hallstatt, the most popular and convenient one is to book a guided tour. Another way is to rent a car and drive upto to Hallstatt. Lastly, public transportation in the form of Trains can be used for reaching Halstatt but there are no direct trains and train frequency is limited.

Salzburg offers several international dining options including Indian restaurants salzburg. During winter, do not miss traditional Austrian treats which are widely available at Christmas markets.
